Senior Apple executive Angela Ahrendts sits atop the ‘Retail Insider Movers & Shakers in Retail Top 100’ report for the second year running as the 2016 version celebrates the achievements of retailers leading the digital transformation of the industry.
The annual report, sponsored by K3 Retail, this year reflects how the retail sector is changing through the ongoing adoption of digital. As a result the roles of many of the people in the report have evolved.
It is less about individuals with e-commerce and multi-channel titles and more about broader-based positions such as chief customer officers. The reality is, pretty much every job in retail now has its share of digital responsibility attached.
The industry has certainly continued to change and with it the influencers now come from an increasingly diverse array of organisations. Take the Top 10 this year. We have the disruptors in Jo Bertram from Uber, Anthony Fletcher of Graze and William Shu from Deliveroo.
From the older order we have Mark Lewis and Paul Coby from John Lewis, Andrew Livingstone and James MacKenzie at Screwfix, and Ray Kelvin and Craig Mackinnon Smith from Ted Baker. They are joined by the ‘new establishment’ of Doug Gurr and Ajay Kavan at Amazon, and Nick Beighton at Asos.
This year’s report is much richer for the fact the Top 50 people are now ranked (compared with 35 in 2015), according to certain criteria [see Methodology in the report P.4], while the remainder are listed in alphabetical order.
This improved ranking is a result of the work of the Advisory Panel who debated who should be in the report and then diligently scored these individuals to give a robust ranked table.
