Aldi cemented its position as the best performing UK drinks website as it retained the top spot ahead of Spar (UK) in the table of the UK’s Top 25 leading drinks retailing websites for February.

This strong performance mirrors the German-based retailer’s strong retail sales, with its UK revenue surging by 28.2% for the 12 weeks to January 20. This helped push its market share up from 2.5% to 3.1%.

Aldi distanced itself from Spar (UK) slightly as it scored 8.34 out of 10 compared with 8.16 in January whereas the convenience store chain only managed the same score as last month with 7.44.

However, Spar (UK) itself edged away from third-placed The Whisky Shop that scored 6.54 versus 7.10 last month. Meanwhile Fortnum & Mason achieved the same 6.50 score out of 10 as in January.

This was sufficient for it to retain its fourth spot in the table, according to the rankings of the top UK drinks retailers’ websites produced exclusively for Retailinsider.com by website testing specialist Sitemorse.

To produce the rankings Sitemorse runs automated software that page-by-page reads the first 125 pages of each website and analyses on the basis of six key criteria – function, code quality, user experience, accessibility, performance and SEO capability.

Although the top four retailers all held the same position as in January there was a newcomer in the top five as Bargain Booze broke into the upper echelons with a score of 6.12 that moved it up two places.

It edged out Budgens and The Wine Society, thereby ending the latter’s strong run that has seen it move up the table over recent months. Other key movers this month included Beermerchants.com that moved up two places to 12th spot following a climb of one place last month.

Likewise, Naked Wines moved up two places to 21stspot following a move up one place in January that took it off the bottom spot. The major faller in February is Majestic Wine that declined three places with a score of 3.58 compared with 3.84 last month.

Again one retailer was excluded from the Sitemorse testing this month, with Sainsbury’s not included in the Top 25 table because of its continued reliance on JavaScript.
