Naked Wines and Wine Society rise up table of Top 25 drinks retail sites

Naked Wines and The Wine Society make major upward moves but still fail to make it into the top 10 of the table of the UK’s Top 25 leading drinks retailing websites for May that is again headed by Spar (UK).

Naked Wines jumps five places from bottom spot last month to sit in 19th place with a score of 3.02 while The Wine Society climbs seven places to 11th spot thereby reversing last month’s fall of eight places. Its score has increased from 3.02 to a more credible 4.10.

However, both are still some way off Spar (UK) that retains its top spot with a score of 7.44, which matches that achieved last month, according to the rankings of the top UK drinks retailers’ websites produced exclusively for by website testing specialist Sitemorse.

To produce the rankings Sitemorse runs automated software that page-by-page reads the first 125 pages of each website and analyses on the basis of six key criteria – function, code quality, user experience, accessibility, performance and SEO capability.

The Whisky Shop also had a decent month as it advanced one place into second spot with a score of 7.10 – just ahead of Aldi that was in joint-top spot back in March. This is in contrast to Selfridges that is this month’s biggest faller with a drop of five places, which pushes it into the bottom spot.

This is rather unfortunate timing for the high-end department store as it earlier this month re-opened its wine department (the London Wine Shop) as a larger unit on the lower ground floor, and added a Harry Gordon’s Bar.

These Sitemorse results come against the backdrop of an impressive level of trading for online drinks retailing. According to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index the online sales for April jumped 18% compared with March. The year-on-year sales levels also grew significantly with an increase of 19% on 2012.

Yet again one retailer was excluded from the Sitemorse testing this month, with Sainsbury’s not included in the Top 25 table because of its continued reliance on JavaScript.
